"Sony / Philips Digital Interface Format" or S / PDIF

The S / PDIF or standard IEC 958 type II, born from standard AES / EBU and was created for the transmission of digital PCM stereo audio signal through stereo components or components of various kinds as a sound card. The advantage of this method of transmission is that it greatly reduces the wiring and, in the case of a TOSLINK cable (fiber optic), immune to electrical interference.
This system is also used in recording studios to interface with each other more audio devices, digital mixers and other interfaces.
